What does “fine, medium and broad” wool mean?

Terminology in the wool market can be confusing, and one of the more uncertain descriptions used is “fine, medium and broad”. In the early days of staple measurement, broad wool was called strong wool, which has petered out as “strong” became synonymous with high staple strength. This article takes a look at the “fine, medium and broad” terminology and how it can be misleading in terms of hedging.
