With the short term rainfall forecast not looking too hopeful in the East and continuing strong demand for hay, freight is becoming an issue.
It’s getting increasingly hard to find trucks to cart the mountains of Hay that has been booked. Stocks of new season shedded Vetch Hay are running thin with buyers noting difficulty securing their needs. As a result, Vetch Hay prices have risen on average $5-10 in the last two weeks.
Sales of old season Hay has also increased dramatically in the last two weeks and any buyers who procrastinate are finding themselves missing out. Cereal Hay prices have trekked sideways but demand is still reasonable and attracting more interest. Buyers are also beginning to look at rice straw as an alternative.
It’s difficult to gauge the levels of stocks left on farm at the moment, but it has clearly changed in the last eight weeks.
The real dry pattern currently being experienced on the East Coast of the country is seeing farmers starting to sow their Hay crops in a cloud of dust.
