Concerns for the small bale hay market

By Farm Tender & Olivia Agar  |  Source: Farm Tender

The call for fodder has pulled back in some regions, but still remains high throughout the country. Small bales and compressed eco bales keep the hobby farmer market going and there is a real shortage right now.

The lack of supply for these small bales is concerning for those with less than a handful of animals to feed. Semi and B Double loads are being trucked into Sydney and the Hunter Valley areas.

As far as the bulk market is concerned, Cereal Hay and Straw prices were all marked up for the fortnight just gone. Good Vetch Hay is scarce, so quotes are at a conservative level but some are getting a higher prices.

Demand remains fairly solid.

Concerns are still front and centre with the season. Only Southern and Western Victoria, South East of SA and part of Western Australia are reporting any real surety in the season from consistent rainfall. Some of the drier regions could still get a decent crop if they get some followup rain soon.

Table 1 summarises hay prices over the period 5th July-18th of July 2018. The following explains the terminology used in the table:

  •  Prices are $ + GST per Metric Tonne - $/mt
  • NS – New Season
  • OS – Old Season
  • 20/10/40/650 - Protein/ME/NDF/Bale weight
  • Shedded – Shedded
